Milano, Mussi, 1809. Large 4to. (29,4x20,6cm). 224 pp. With frontispiece (portrait of Edward Jenner, by Anderloni after J.R. Smith), an engraving (medaillons) on the title-page, one in the text (medaillons) and 4 coloured folding plates. Red boards, with gold fillet. (hinges & edges worn, spine a bit creased).
¶ First compilation of earlier writings of Luigi Sacco (1769-1836; doctor and hygienist) on vaccination (against smallpox). Immediately after Edward Jenner's discovery of the efficacy of smallpox vaccination Sacco became a staunch supporter, and began a huge - and successful - propaganda campaign. He became the most famous pro-vaccination advocate in continental Europe; this Treatise is seen as his most important or influential work. (A.Castiglioni, Enciclopedia Italiana, 1936; G.
